HILLA

A night light system for a safer home

Preventing fallings and giving confidence

What started as a school project grew into a functional lighting system. Our team was participating in the Nordic Independent Living Challenge. We got into the semi-finals, among 25 best solutions of total 440 ones. The aim of the contest was to find solutions that can help the frail elderly and people with disabilities live independently in their own home.

Our night light solution Hilla is designed to help the elderly and the visually impaired to move in their homes. We aim to prevent fallings and give the user more confident feeling.

80 000 visually impaired in Finland only, more than 80% of them are over the age of 65

Impaired night vision caused by the effects of ageing have an impact on almost everyone. While moving in the dark the risk of injuries increases. Fallings cause approximately 7000 fractured hips in the aged population of Finland, about 1000 deaths per year. It is a big cause of concern for the elderly and their families. We have collaborated with the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired to design Hilla to meet the specific needs of the visually impaired.

System is wireless, rechargeable, motion-activated and lightweight. It creates a route of light through the darkness for user’s individual needs; whether there is a frequent need of visiting the bathroom or fetching water from the kitchen.

Participating in Nordic Independent Living Challenge and Dubai Design Week

The entire project has been a great learning experience as it has challenged us and taken us to surprising places. Hilla night light system was co-designed with the elderly living in the Helsinki region. We were also able to test the early prototype with our test group. With the great support of Nordic Innovation and the five Nordic capital cities we were able to develop out idea into concept. Nordic Independent Living Challenge also offered us great opportunities to plan the business model, build a launching page, train pitching and to network and collaborate with other innovative people from all the Nordic countries.

In the autumn 2016, Hilla night light system was invited to Global Grad Show 2016 that is a design exhibition part of the Dubai Design Week. Global Grad Show gathered together design students all over the world and provided lots of possibilities to network and get to know to other designers.
